When I started my crypto journey all I had was the bitcoin whitepaper and online communities as a source of information. After a while, people like Andreas Antonopulos started educating the world on why cryptocurrencies like bitcoin are important. As the years passed, we’ve witnessed a boom in information, with books, youtube channels, telegram communities, websites, applications and whatnot, all focused on spreading the word about cryptocurrencies and blockchain innovation.
Therefore, it feels right to highlight some of the women that decided to explore, contribute and remain in the industry, reporting, educating and even exposing the good or the bad in the crypto world. They had an impact on my journey and it may help guide yours too.
Unlike my usual one woman profile, I thought to myself that this time I should tell you about a few of my favourite crypto women to follow. Depending on where you are in the world, you may have heard about them, met them or even learned from them. If not, make sure to follow them because you’ll not be disappointed.
Laura Shin - If you haven’t yet listened to the Unchained podcast then you’re missing out. Laura is a brilliant interviewer, calm and collected even when asking the toughest questions. Since 2015 she interviews the biggest names in crypto and blockchain and she’s not afraid to touch upon sensitive topics. Her journalism background and experience at Forbes enables Laura to easily explain cryptocurrency and blockchain to general public and spread awareness on the relevance it has on our lives and our financial future. Moreover, her book, The Cryptopians: Idealism, Greed, Lies, and the Making of the First Big Cryptocurrency Craze, reveals 'the story of the idealists, technologists, and opportunists fighting to bring cryptocurrency to the masses.’
Naomi Brockwell - The most entertaining and yet exceptionally educational content I watched for the past six years comes from Naomi’s videos. Naomi Brockwell is a tech journalist, film and TV producer, and creator of NBTV - a channel focused on privacy, tech, and crypto. Naomi was a producer for the 2015 award winning documentary Bitcoin: The End of Money as We Know It. Moreover, she was a policy associate at the New York Bitcoin Center from 2013 - 2015. A veteran in the industry, Naomi illustrates the importance of cryptocurrency and privacy in a world where financial education is not prevalent and offline / online privacy crumbles before our eyes.
Natalie Brunell - Natalie is an investing journalist, podcaster and Bitcoin educator who hosts the Coin Stories podcast and Hard Money show and a contributor to Bitcoin Magazine. As cited on her web page, Natalie was an award-winning TV journalist and investigative reporter. For more than 10 years she covered in-depth local and national news topics and holds an Emmy for breaking news coverage. Natalie’s focus is bitcoin adoption and its possible use-cases in relation to economic issues facing society. A great resource for staying up-to-date with current affairs and how regulation is evolving with reference to bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general.
Crypto WendyO - I love Wendy’s story because she is a real-life example of how someone from a non-financial background can turn their life around and thrive in a field where it’s not always easy to be a woman. Wendy has a degree in business and marketing and previous work experience in healthcare. In 2017 she became interested in crypto and she learned all she could find about it, including how to trade crypto. Today she runs The O Show on youtube with over 170k subscribers and millions of views. She talks about everything that happens in crypto from interviews, project reviews, market updates and crypto technical analysis.
Camila Russo - Former financial journalist and Bloomberg markets reporter, Camila is the founder and CEO of The Defiant, a media company reporting on decentralised finance (DeFi), a new financial system being built on top of blockchains. She’s the author of the book The Infinite Machine: How an Army of Crypto-hackers Is Building the Next Internet with Ethereum where she details Ethereum’s journey from creation to DeFi. If you’re looking to learn and understand decentralised finance, follow Camila, subscribe to The Defiant newsletter or watch their youtube channel.
Carly Reilly - Overpriced JPEGs is a show about NFTs and the Metaverse and what is happening behind the scenes. After a career in finance, politics and media, Carly discovered non fungible tokens (NFTs) last year and she started her weekly podcast as part of the Bankless Shows. She breaks down latest news in NFTs and Metaverse with her guests, trying to separate real value projects from the wild west of scams, whilst attempting to understand what gives value to a JPEG and why the Metaverse is here to stay.
Lea Thompson - Have you ever heard of Steemit.com? It’s a blockchain based decentralised social media application that rewards users with cryptocurrency for the content they create and post on the platform. Steemit is where Leah started her crypto journey:
“Fast forward a few years later and I am now an avid crypto enthusiast – making content and focusing on highlighting projects that help increase crypto adoption. My super power is being able to take complex ideas (like blockchain technology) and find ways to explain them that are approachable and interesting to a broad audience.”
Check out her youtube channel where she posts short fun videos explaining everything from blockchain basics to DeFi, NFTs, crypto wallets and more.
Randi Hipper - She is a 19 years-old New Yorker who loves crypto and wants to educate her generation and spread crypto adoption. At 16 she started investing her pocket money into bitcoin and inspired by her father she continued learning about it and recognised its potential to change the world:
"We have to be able to reach more people and educate more people, which is what my mission is,"she said in an interview for Markets Insider. "I'm trying to use social media, and I'm trying to make more educational content just to reach more Gen Z — because it really is the education that matters."
Randi is known on social media as Miss Teen Crypto and she runs the Miss Teen Crypto Podcast & The Weekly Zest on Youtube, Instagram and Twitch.
There are so many more women who move the needle in crypto, blockchain, metaverse and I would like to hear who’s your role model and inspiration in the industry. Don’t forget to tag them in the comments below.
